Road to KDE 3.4

Posted under: at 10:09

My Gentoo system is getting rusty (by Gentoo’s standards, at least). It’s now time to upgrade! Because of the new KDE 3.4, this is probably my first major upgrade I’ve done using a puny GPRS connection.

At first, I thought this is the right time to try the new KDE split ebuilds, but I decide not to further waste my time :). The split ebuilds is too new, and the ‘monolithic’ build is still well supported. Maybe later.

SOCKS Forwarding With OpenSSH

Posted under: at 01:48

OpenSSH

OpenSSH includes an overlooked but very useful feature: SOCKS proxy forwarding. From ssh(1) man page:

-D port

Specifies a local “dynamic” application-level port forwarding. This works by allocating a socket to listen to port on the local side, and whenever a connection is made to this port, the connection is forwarded over the secure channel, and the application protocol is then used to determine where to connect to from the remote machine. Currently the SOCKS4 and SOCKS5 protocols are supported, and ssh will act as a SOCKS server. Only root can forward privileged ports. Dynamic port forwardings can also be specified in the configuration file.

If that’s too cryptic for you to comprehend, here is an example scenario:

Connecting P900 to My Linux Workstation

Posted under: at 17:56

I need to see how my web pages looks on my P900’s Opera after a few changes. But it is unconvenient to send files back and forth to my web server, and then test it using GPRS connection. Even so considering I’m using that GPRS connection to do my uploads :). Yes, I have tested it on my desktop Opera using small screen rendering, but that’s not the real thing.

The following is what I did. Note, this is NOT a guide how to connect to the Internet using p900 as a modem which is probably what you want. This is a guide how to connect a P900 to a desktop computer using Bluetooth under Linux, so that I would be able to open web pages available in the desktop computer’s web server.

This guide is also applicable to the P800 and P910.

Introducing FireFox in a Slideshow

Posted under: at 15:08

William has made an excellent introduction to Firefox in the form of slideshow. The slideshow is available in PDF format and licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial License. That means you may use it for your own FireFox advocacy as long as it is non commercial and you retain any attribution to William himself.

The slideshow consisted of two parts, the first part tries to introduce FireFox to casual users, and the second part tries to introduce it to web developers. It is written in English, but he welcomes anybody who wants to make a translation.

Yahoo! has released Yahoo! Toolbar for Firefox. Some previous reports said that the toolbar is only available for Windows, with MacOSX and Linux version coming soon. But, I was able to install the toolbar under Linux without any problem.

BlankOn Linux (Mudah-mudahan) Sudah Menginjak 1.0

Posted under: at 02:32

Posted under: at 16:44

InfoLinux

Majalah InfoLinux edisi Februari 2005 menyertakan BlankOn Linux 1.0 release candidate 2.

Search Keywords vs. Search Plugins in Mozilla

Posted under: at 23:42

What is “Search Plugins”? What is “Search Keywords”?

  • Search Plugins: They are plugins that define a search engine within the Mozilla application framework. They make a search engine appear in search box, usually located on the upper right hand corner of a Mozilla web browser window (Seamonkey or Firefox). They also add functionality to the search sidebar.
  • Search Keywords: They are keywords that function as shortcut for search engines. For example: type “google example” in location bar (where you type URLs) will bring a Google search for keyword ‘example’.

Why Search Keywords?

  • It is simpler. Simply type the engine keyword (for example ‘google’), followed by space and the keyword you want to search.
  • It requires less keystrokes and/or mouseclicks. No need to click on search box, select search engine, and finally type keywords.
  • Less clutter on the screen. You can free up screen space used by search box!
  • It is simpler to add your own search keywords, not so with search plugins.
  • No more annoying leftover keywords used from previous searches. And no need to clear search box from leftover keywords too!

Why Search Plugins?

  • Ordinary users might not be immediately aware of search keywords.
  • It is easier. Click on the box and type the keyword. No need to figure out which keyword to use.
  • End users can easily add more search plugins simply by clicking a link
  • Unlike search keywords, search plugins usually act the same from computer to computer.
  • Search sidebar is sometimes very handy.

Which one for me? Neither, because I’m using Konqueror. But there is ‘Web Shortcut’ feature which is very similar to Search Keywords in Mozilla.

Roy Suryo Tentang Linux

Posted under: at 10:53

Tadi malam, 11/01, jam 10.30-an, saya mendengarkan RRI Programma 2 Jakarta.

Mari tertawa! Hi Roy!™

First Experience of Burning a DVD

Posted under: at 01:46

Yay! I burned a DVD for the first time. At last I can make my one month old NEC ND-3500AG to good use, creating a coaster in the process due to bad media (I hope). It took me about 8 minutes to burn 3.2 GB of data to an el-cheapo 4X DVD+R disc. All went well except for the bad media and some problem with K3B and growisofs.

Because of a change in Linux 2.6.9, a normal user can no longer burn a CD. At least using the current userspace tools. So, whenever I need to burn a CD, I used to run ‘sudo k3b’. But when invoked that way, K3B wouldn’t be able to detect growisofs. When I ran k3b using normal user, it could detect growisofs successfully but burning would fail. After several minutes fiddling and googling, it turned out that growisofs refuses to run under sudo. From growisofs man page:
