Kernel 2.6.10 is Out!

When doing an `emerge –sync ; emerge -Dupv world` ritual, I noticed that Kernel 2.6.10 is out! Slashdot has already [noticed](http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/12/25/0322205&threshold=5&tid=105&tid=106) this. Apparently it was in Portage only a few hours after Linus released it! :)

  2. One of my friend asked me rethorically about the speed of Linux development process and some not-so-wanted vulnerabilities discovered. He was eager to know why kernel team seems to be in hurry releasing newer version(s) with some historical reputations many of them having bug. No, he does not mean to burn a flame, nor thinking himself knowing more about kernel’s complete issues. More precisely, he is ordinary Linux user with some extra interesting to *free* BSD (not FreeBSD) families path.

Maybe Linux development team attracts more potential expert; maybe their resources for Linux are amazing — I do not really know. I’d like to think positively that any newest version of softwares (surely including kernel) are not intended to be used by all users. Such levels of “hurries” are different among us, ordinary users, and such levels of satisfactions developing newer versions are also other aspects owned by developers.

I am myself still like a snail creeping among versions; because as long as they are enough for me, classic tools are adequate.

  3. #4, agree with you, it should be distributors who decide which kernel to use, they should know more than ordinary users, and they should be able to provide support when needed

I, on the other hand, need to follow kernel development, it is part of my job, some of my hardware demands it, and it is simply fun :)

of course, i won’t blindly do kernel upgrades to every machine i have access to, it is a waste of time, it is a support nightmare and it is expensive (it costs us about $100 for every failed remote kernel upgrades), most of the time i just left the decision to the distributors
